Edmar Castañeda, harp
Dafnis Prieto, percussion

"When I saw Edmar and Dafnis literally burn up the stage at the Banff Centre Jazz Festival, I knew it was something I had to share with Vancouver audiences."

— BARRY SHIFFMAN

Forget what you think you know about the harp. To hear Columbian virtuoso Edmar Castañedasimultaneously deliver stunning melody, innovative jazz harmonies and complex rhythms, one can’t help but be in awe. Since his move to the United States in 1994, Castañeda has taken New York and the world stage by storm revolutionizing the way audiences and critics alike consider the harp. A master at realizing beautiful complexities of time while skillfully drawing out lush colours and dynamic spirit, theNew York Times characterized Castañeda as “almost a world unto himself.”

Cuban jazz percussionist Dafnis Prieto has been described as easily the most impressive young drummer to come on the jazz scene during the past decade. With dazzling technical abilities that electrify audiences, Prieto is a classically trained musician who absorbed from an early age the multifaceted percussive traditions of his native Cuba. He is known for transposing elements from his Afro-Cuban musical heritage onto a jazz drum kit, incorporating congas, timbales, and the layered rhythmic patterns of rumba and son.
