Jake Heggie is at the forefront of North American composers. In addition to nine operas, he has created songs, concerti, orchestral works and chamber music. Based on Sister Helen Prejean's biographical account of her relationship with inmates on death row, and following the Oscar-winning movie of the same name, this popular opera chronicles the story of a convicted Louisiana murderer who is befriended by a Catholic nun seeking to understand the nature of divine forgiveness.

The expansive score incorporates gospel, pop music and brilliant sound effects. The work's moral complexity, emotional depth, and lush music make Dead Man Walking a standout of contemporary opera.
