LOUIS LORTIE, PIANO; VSO/ JOHN STORGARDS
This is a very important concert featuring two absolutely world-class artists. Over the last 30 years, Louis Lortie has stood as one of Canada’s greatest pianists. He has left us a wonderful legacy of internationally-acclaimed recordings (on the Chandos label), combining supreme technical fluency and elegance with impeccable musicianship. He plays Chopin for us here. John Storgårds is one of Finland’s exceptional conductors, recently taking the classical music world by storm. He is both Chief Conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic and Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic. He performs Sibelius’ First Symphony for us. His cycle of the complete Sibelius symphonies with the BBC Philharmonic will be released on Chandos Records in the spring of 2014; this season he also embarks on a project to perform and record all of the Nielsen symphonies.
