NEW MUSIC FESTIVAL
The VSO New Music Festival is a particularly enterprising event, highlighting five works by distinguished Australian composer Brett Dean and two by the VSO’s composer-in-residence, Edward Top, with four local BC composers also being represented. Dean will play his own Viola Concerto (2004). The Rascher Saxophone Quartet from Germany will also perform in two intriguing works: Dean’s Water Music and Top’s Saxophone Quartet Concerto. The exciting local ensemble Standing Wave (Artists-in Residence at UBC since 2003) will play in the first concert. For those who always think that ‘new music’ is forbidding, one will be amazed at how beautiful and sensual a lot of this music is, and what a sonic experience it is.
